Whitetail Cabin at Wilds Resort is a large three-bedroom vacation home on a level lot near the water. At 900 square feet, this cozy rental can comfortably accommodate up to six overnight guests. The cabin is open and spacious with vaulted ceilings and Jack Pine paneling that gives it a rustic appeal. Natural light enters the living spaces from windows on all sides of the house, along with great views on the lake-facing side.
The central living area includes a fully equipped kitchen with a breakfast bar and stools, as well as a family-style dining table with chairs for six and a sitting room with a sofa, an armchair and a wall-mounted flat-screen TV. Guests will love the large screen porch — complete with resin lounge chairs and a clear view of the native eagles and loons. Cabins at Wilds Resort on Shell Lake offer light housekeeping during your stay, as well as a fishing boat included in your rental.
Tucked between the Smoky Hills State Forest and the Tamarac Wildlife Refuge, this four-season vacation destination delivers the ultimate in adventure, relaxation and everything in between.
Sleeping arrangements: Whitetail Cabin has three private bedrooms and one full bath with a tiled shower. Bedrooms one and two are furnished with a queen-sized bed each, while bedroom three has two twin-sized beds. An additional roll away bed or air mattress can be provided upon request.
Whitetail Cabin is part of a fun vacation community at The Wilds Resort and Campground, one that includes five other cabins and a number of scenic camping sites. Guests at The Wilds enjoy access to a sandy beach area, provided deck chairs, water toys, paddle boards, kayaks and canoes — not to mention great fishing. 3,146-acre Shell Lake is home to walleye, northern, bass, perch, crappie and sun fish.
The resort also offers a shared boat launch, beach volleyball, basketball courts, horse shoes, tetherball and a children’s playground. The entire wilderness scene is hemmed in by 50 acres of tall pines and white birch, making it a quiet and serene place to getaway — and an excellent place to spot owls, chickadee, hummingbirds, heron, and other small critters.
The Wilds Resort is located just next door to the Tamarac Wildlife Refuge and only 45 minutes from the beautiful Itasca State Park. Centered between the neighboring towns of Detroit Lakes and Park Rapids, these lakefront cabins offer easy access to restaurants and shopping, several golf courses, amusement parks, horseback riding, local festivals and events, and other exciting attractions — not to mention the spectacular sunsets over Shell Lake.
Visitors can explore the lakes and the Mississippi River by boat or adventure through the surrounding trees on foot. The cabins are also conveniently located to the Hubbard County Historical Museum and the North Country Museum of Arts, while every year (in August) Detroit Lakes hosts one of the largest country music festivals in the world.

We bought the property that would become The Wilds Resort and Campground in 2001 with a dream of raising our family in an unspoiled natural setting. We moved north with our five children and put all of our accumulated skills in carpentry and decorating to use by renovating the seven existing cabins and the lodge.
The resort is always a work in progress, with the most recent major renovations being the new build of the two-story Wolves Den cabin and the remodeling of Loon’s Nest in 2007. Together, we have cultivated the ideal location to spend quality family time with our kids — and we love to share the space with other families. Welcome to the Wilds!
