It’s cabin time™ in Hibbing
Hibbing, MN area cabins and lakefront resorts offer guests a fishing vacation they’ll never forget. Bob Dylan lovers will already be familiar with Hibbing, MN a small town tucked away in the Iron Range of Northern Minnesota. In addition to being Dylan&rsquo:s hometown, the modern-day mining town of Hibbing also has an interesting history as “the town that moved”.
Though small, Hibbing&rsquo:s history, and the area&rsquo:s rustic beauty make it a gem. Interestingly, the current location of Hibbing is not it&rsquo:s original. Due to the rich iron ore under the town, from 1919 to 1921, the whole town was moved. Businesses, homes, everything. You can still visit the original town site, where only lamp posts remain. Both past and present life in Hibbing revolve around mining and you can witness it first hand at the Hull Rust Mine, one of the largest open pit mines in the world. This national landmark, with its rich hues of exposed earth is truly a sight to see. For the best view, bike the Mesabi Trail. This paved trail currently connects 25 towns in the Iron Range and offers views of mining scapes, clear lakes, lush forests and ranges from flat stretches to challenging hills.
If you&rsquo:re still enjoying the fresh air when you return, check out the Carey Recreation Lake Area. With a beach, playground and trails for hiking, biking, and even cross country skiing, it’s the perfect place to take the family for an afternoon or to relax with a book.
In the heart modern-day Hibbing there&rsquo:s something interesting for everyone to learn. Before you hit the Mesabi Trail, stop in the Greyhound Bus Museum, which is at the trailhead. Quirky and unique, it gives a deep look into Greyhounds roots. For a snack afterwards, Minnesota&rsquo:s oldest Italian bakery is just down the street. Still owned by the founder&rsquo:s family, the bakery uses the original, hundred year old recipes and still hand-roll the dough they use. Choose from authentic Italian and European treats such as potica or kolacky, or snatch up a piece of strudel or cookie.
Afterwards, take a photo by Bob Dylan&rsquo:s historic home then tour Hibbing High School, where Dylan graduated. The school is more reminiscent of a grand theater than a high school, with towering columns at the entrance, frescoes on the ceiling, and the opulent 1,800 seat auditorium. To learn more about the town, the Hibbing Historical Society Museum is worth a visit. You might even get to hear a first hand account from a local! For more mining related stops, head to nearby Chisholm for the Minnesota Discovery Center, Minnesota Museum of Mining, and the Iron Man statue, dedicated to the Iron Range’s miners’ and mining history.
Hibbing has a variety of events throughout the year; the Annual Blast From the Past Car Show, Hibbing Jubilee in June, the Mesabi-Trail Tour in August, the Labor Day Shootout at the Hibbing Raceway, and the holiday Spirit of Unity Parade in November. Whatever your idea of fun might be, there is something for you.
Make rustic Hibbing and the surrounding towns your next stop and get ready to experience the unique beauty and history of the Iron Range.
