Unique Features

The Blue Heron Bed and Breakfast Lodge offers one of the most unique destination experiences with its location right on the edge of the most amazing Minnesota wilderness along the International Boundary of the United States and Canada. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is known for its untouched beauty, wildlife, and pristine waters. Whether you come to paddle or just take in the scenic beauty of this wildness from the lodge, you’ll be happy you came to see it all.

Our canoes, kayaks and SUP are free for guests to use. We also have a pontoon boat and boat motors you can rent. Launch your favorite water explorer from our shore to fish or roam about. The marsh grass in our front yard is a moose favorite, so be on the watch for a moose munching sighting. There are also two active beaver houses out on the marsh that boasts calla lilies and blue flag iris in the spring.

You may also see or hear the sound of a wolf pack. Eagles, Great Blue Herons, and other birds fish and hunt in the marsh making it a bird-watching paradise. In the winter we have complimentary snowshoes for you to strap on and explore the woods and local trails. We can even arrange a dog sledding outing with a local outfitter.

Things To Do

You can explore our own ten acres and the BWCA next door by either boat or by foot. We supply a canoe, life jackets, paddles, maps, and permits. You can be as active as you like, or just relax in all this beauty in a comfortable lodge chair by the stove, on a deck, or by the shore.

Want to fish? Try dangling a line in the wild rice patch just off our shore for bass, northern pike & bluegills. Our dock is a great place to give your children or grandchildren their first fishing lesson.

The Winton Roadhouse Pub is only five miles from the lodge with pan pizza, Tiki bar, and live weekend music. Take the short 17-minute drive into Ely to explore local shops and restaurants. Plan a visit to the International Wolf Center to learn more about wolves through interactive displays and view wolves in a natural habitat. Children will have fun at the Legacy Toy store that includes an adjoining candy store. You just may need to pick up that new board game you’ve been wanting to try for an evening of family fun back at the lodge. No matter where your day’s adventure takes you, you’ll be happy to return to the serenity of the Blue Heron Bed & Breakfast Lodge to listen to the sight and sounds of wildlife and see the twinkling stars in the sky.

Reviews

This is an idyllic place to stay for a comfortable vacation next to the Boundary Waters wilderness. The B&B is upscale, the service is excellent, and the owners very friendly. Hiking and saunas, and fun conversations around the wood stove. Robert
We visited in the winter time, so we had a lot more personal attention than you might get from B&B hosts during the busy season. Tiffany and Chad are wonderful hosts, incredibly down to earth and fun to talk with. The Blue Heron made an excellent base of operations to strike out and explore the frozen north on snowshoes or sight-seeing, and it was a wonderful and cozy B&B to return to. Breakfasts were delicious. Jon
The friendliness of the host coupled with the most incredible wilderness setting makes me want to return over and over at any time of year! Some of the best view of autumn colors, and even in winter the activities are bountiful.
Comfortable, quiet, clean, delightful place to stay. Delicious breakfasts. We stayed over New Years Eve holiday and enjoyed nearby dog sledding during the day and a hot sauna at the B&B in the evenings. We can't wait to visit them in the summer.

About the Owner/Manager

My wife, Tiffany, and I lived in the Chicagoland area for 10+ years, but now affectionately call Ely, MN home with our two children. Not only do we own/ run the Blue Heron Bed and Breakfast, we wear many hats in our community such as resort manager, real estate agent, property manager, and teacher. Our two children, Mason and Isabella, keep us busy throughout the year playing multiple sports and activities.

My parents have run a resort in the area for over 20 years, and we’ve learned from them how to make our guests feel at home and make lasting vacation memories. Ask us about things to do and where to eat. We know the area well. We look forward to your stay and sharing your time in Ely with your family and ours.
