Cottage 1 at Croftville Road Cottages is a cozy four‑season retreat on the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Set just steps from the resort’s inn and about 80 feet from the water, the cottage has an open view of Lake Superior with a large spruce tree to the left and a fire circle and patio furniture in front. Walking paths, native vegetation and rocks are all that separate you from the beach, giving you easy access to the lake, spectacular sunrises and the soothing sound of waves.
The lakeside bedroom features a plush queen‑size bed, a romantic gas stove and a patio door that frames the water. A decorative gas stove and picture window warm the living room, which is furnished with a plush futon, two wingback chairs and a dinette set. There’s a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, stove, oven and refrigerator, plus a bathroom with a corner shower. A second bedroom with a full‑size bed sits on the road side of the cabin, and the futon converts to a full bed so this cottage can comfortably sleep up to six guests.
Open all year, this four‑season getaway sits on 540 feet of shoreline with multiple log swings and steps down to the rocks along the lake walk. As part of a family‑run resort just three miles north‑east of downtown Grand Marais, Cottage 1 offers a private campfire ring, on‑site firewood and lake‑facing patio area. Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend by the gas stove or a family adventure on the North Shore, this cottage combines old‑fashioned charm with modern comforts.
The cottage’s standout feature is its lakeside bedroom with a plush queen bed and a cozy gas stove. A patio door opens onto your own paver patio, so you wake up to the sparkle of Lake Superior without leaving bed. A handcrafted mantel shelf over the stove and a pretty tile hearth speak to the care that went into renovating this 1920s cabin. With its open view of the lake—thanks to a single spruce tree to the left—this cottage is a front-row seat to sunrises and stargazing.
Inside the living area, a decorative gas stove and large picture window bring the shoreline indoors. The futon, wingback chairs and dining table encourage conversation while you watch the waves. Outside you’ll find your own fire circle, patio furniture and lake‑view log swings; you’re only about 80 feet from the beach, with native vegetation and rocks creating a natural barrier. The fully equipped kitchen, corner shower and two bedrooms mean couples or small families can enjoy all the comforts of home in a romantic North Shore setting.
The resort sits on 540 feet of rocky Lake Superior shoreline with log swings and gentle steps down to the water. Spend your mornings sipping coffee on your patio watching the sun rise over the lake, then take the lakeside walkway down to the rocks to skip stones or explore tide pools. In the evening, enjoy a bonfire in your private fire ring as the waves crash nearby—a relaxing soundtrack for s’mores and stargazing.
Our cabin is located on Croftville Road, known as the “walking road,” where guests and locals stroll along the lake. Walk or bike into Grand Marais, just three miles away, to browse art galleries, pick up smoked fish or handmade chocolates, and sample the North Shore’s vibrant dining scene. Don’t miss sunrise at Artist’s Point or a visit to the original North House Folk School campus.
Outdoor enthusiasts will love nearby state parks: Cascade River State Park showcases seven waterfalls in one mile and numerous trails through cedar and spruce forests. Heading north on the Gunflint Trail, you’ll find scenic overlooks and chances to spot moose, plus access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Winter guests can ski or snowboard at Lutsen Mountains ski resort about 23 miles away.
Further afield, day‑trip to Grand Portage National Monument and the High Falls, Minnesota’s highest waterfall, or drive up the North Shore Scenic Drive for more waterfalls and historic lighthouses. Back at the cottage, we provide free Wi‑Fi and are happy to recommend local outfitters, charter fishing and seasonal events.

We have stayed in cabins all over the U.S., but Croftville Road Cottages stands out for its top notch accommodations and breathtaking views of Lake Superior. This cozy cottage had everything we needed and served as a perfect base for exploring the trails and parks around Grand Marais. — Matt
What a peaceful haven! We fell asleep to the sound of waves and spent rainy afternoons reading by the window seat while watching storms roll across Lake Superior. We left feeling rested and inspired. — Sarah
Everything about our stay was comfortable and welcoming. The cottage was spotless, the fireplaces made evenings cozy, and the extra touches like games and puzzles were so thoughtful. We'll be back! — Jennifer

We’re Mike and Teresa Chmelik, long‑time North Shore residents who dreamed of creating a lakeside retreat. In 2003 we purchased this set of classic 1920s cottages with friends and spent the next few years renovating them from the studs up. Croftville Road Cottages opened in January 2007, and ever since we’ve been proud to welcome guests from across the country. As your hosts we live on site and are happy to share local tips, whether it’s where to find the best wild blueberries or which hiking trail is in peak fall color.
