Cottage 3 at Croftville Road Cottages is nestled on the rocky shore of Lake Superior just three miles from downtown Grand Marais. Set back about 80 feet from the beach, the cottage sits among aspen, spruce, balsam fir and birch trees with an uninterrupted view of the lake. Only footpaths, native vegetation and glacial rocks lie between you and the water, so you’re never far from the sound of waves. A lakeside fire circle with comfortable seating and a charcoal grill invites guests to gather under the stars, and a private patio is perfect for morning coffee while the sun rises over the horizon.
Inside, this four-season cottage blends classic North Shore charm with thoughtful amenities. The lakeside bedroom features a queen bed, a romantic gas stove and a patio door that opens to the lakefront. The living room is warmed by a decorative gas stove and offers a picture window facing the water. A plush futon, two wing-back chairs and a dinette set create a comfortable space to relax after a day of exploring. The fully equipped kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals, and there’s a full bathroom with shower. On the roadside of the cottage is a second bedroom with a full-size bed.
Designed to sleep up to six guests (two on the futon), Cottage 3 is decorated with a loons-and-ducks motif and offers reliable wireless internet. An artesian well provides cold, delicious drinking water. Whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat or a family getaway, this cottage offers the comfort of home with the allure of Lake Superior right outside your door.
The setting of Cottage 3 is one of its biggest draws. It’s the furthest cottage from the inn, providing privacy and panoramic views of Lake Superior through a canopy of pines and birches. With more than 540 feet of shoreline to explore, guests can watch freighters on the horizon, hunt for agates among the rocks or simply listen to the waves roll in. A stairway leads down to the shoreline for easy access. Back at the cottage, a dedicated fire pit and patio furniture mean you can spend evenings under the northern stars sharing stories and roasting marshmallows.
Inside, the cottage is filled with thoughtful touches that make it feel like a home away from home. Gas stoves in both the bedroom and living room add warmth and ambiance on chilly nights. The picture window and sliding patio door maximize lake views from the living spaces. A full kitchen stocked with dishes, cookware and utensils makes it easy to prepare meals, and the cottage’s decor pays tribute to the loons and ducks that call the North Shore home. The property draws its water from an artesian well, so you’ll enjoy fresh, clear drinking water straight from the tap.
A stay at Croftville Road Cottages puts you on the doorstep of Lake Superior. Spend your days skipping stones, searching for agates or relaxing on the shoreline. The lakeside fire pit is ideal for evening campfires, and the network of walking paths throughout the property lets you explore native plants and wildlife. In winter, you can sit by the gas stove and watch storms roll across the big lake while staying warm and cozy indoors.
Grand Marais is only three miles away and offers plenty to see and do. Explore the harbor and walk out to Artists’ Point to watch boats come and go. Browse local shops and art galleries, sample fresh doughnuts from the beloved bakery and take a class at the North House Folk School. Grand Marais hosts events throughout the year, from live music at the harbor to the annual Fisherman’s Picnic.
The surrounding Cook County is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground. Hike a section of the Superior Hiking Trail, trek to the dramatic Devil’s Kettle waterfall in Judge C.R. Magney State Park or take a scenic drive up the Gunflint Trail. Lutsen Mountains, about 23 miles away, offers skiing, snowboarding and an alpine slide. Pincushion Mountain and Cascade River State Park provide additional hiking and cross-country skiing opportunities. You can also fish, kayak or paddleboard on nearby inland lakes, and in the winter months the area boasts hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile and ski trails.
