Inn Suite #5 is a two-story lakeside hideaway along Croftville Road on Lake Superior. On the main floor there's a sunny kitchen stocked with full-size appliances, a bay-window dinette and a cozy living area with wood-burning fireplace and futon.
A winding staircase leads to the second-floor bedroom and bath. Your bedroom features a plush queen bed, decorative gas stove, spa tub for two in a bay window overlooking the lake, and your own half bath with pedestal sink and shower.
This romantic suite sleeps up to four adults (two on futon) and is designed as an adults-only retreat. Children under 12 are not permitted. The lakeside views and classic cottage accents evoke the feeling of a North Shore fishing village with modern comforts.
What sets Inn Suite #5 apart are the handcrafted details. The living room boasts a wood-burning fireplace framed by a white pine mantel milled by Teresa’s father. Recycled pine stair treads and a wrought iron handrail lead to the bedroom reminiscent of a grandmother’s attic.
Upstairs, the romantic bay window houses a spa tub for two where you can soak while watching waves break below. A decorative gas stove adds warmth, and your private porch and lawn with log swings, fire circles and picnic tables invite you to linger by Lake Superior, perhaps even catch the Northern Lights on a clear night.
Right outside your door, explore 540 feet of rocky Lake Superior shoreline via a groomed lakewalk. Sit on a log swing and read, toast marshmallows in a waterfront fire circle, or stroll down the stairs to search for polished stones along the beach.
In Grand Marais, three miles away, you’ll find award-winning restaurants, art galleries, the Grand Marais Art Colony and North House Folk School. Hike in nearby Cascade River and Judge C.R. Magney state parks, climb the Superior Hiking Trail, or ski and bike at Pincushion Mountain.
Winter visitors can ski at Lutsen Mountains (23 miles) or snowshoe along the Gunflint Trail. Day trip to Grand Portage National Monument (35 miles), scenic Highway 61, or cross into Canada to visit Thunder Bay (80 miles). Whether you want shopping, dining or outdoor recreation, the North Shore delivers.

Value Season (Jan 4–May 7 & Nov 1–Dec 17): $211/night for 7+ nights; $237/night for 3–6 nights; $264/night for 1–2 nights. Rates are based on double occupancy; Inn Suite #5 sleeps four but does not accommodate children under 12. Extra adults are $15/night. Tax of 12.375% is not included. Croftville Road Cottages is operated by Mike and Teresa Chmelik, who purchased the property with friends in 2003 and spent several years lovingly restoring the historic cottages and house. They opened the inn to guests on January 1, 2007, honoring the area’s fishing heritage with handcrafted features and recycled materials.
Teresa and Mike live on site and personally oversee the cottages and inn.
