This spacious, custom-built cabin overlooking clean, clear Sand Lake is the perfect place to create memories. Relax each night to a brilliant sunset on the expansive lakeside deck. Or bring the wine and cheese inside for a cozy night by the fireplace. Spend the day at the lake as loons float by, or gather at the large, live-edge oak table for meals and games. Nearby state parks and Duluth are easy day trips.
This cabin was lovingly crafted by the previous owner (a renowned contractor) for his family. The expert craftsmanship and eye for detail create a home overflowing with character and charm. Original Swedish architecture (vertical logs, inside and out), as well as a stone hearth from 1954 give it a warm, friendly glow. You won't feel like you're renting here; you'll feel like you're home.
A huge live-edge oak table is the focal point of the main floor, and the perfect gathering place for meals and family games. Radiating from there are the living room with craftsman furniture and a modern kitchen with all amenities. Giant picture windows, revealing reliably gorgeous sunsets, animate the west side of the house. There are three bedrooms on the main floor, as well as laundry.
Architectural features such as the "kids' counter" in the kitchen, original door latches and doors, and a hidey-hole playroom for kids in the stairwell welcome the whole family. Decorative features like light fixtures, ornate railings, and old snowshoes hung in the common room will make you feel like you've been living here for years. Add to that a full basement (with ping-pong table), a bunk room, and a full second floor master bedroom (king-size bed), and you'll want to make this a regular retreat.

Along with an assortment of toys and books for younger guests, we also provide some great outdoor toys for grown-ups. This rental includes the complimentary use of a canoe, a kayak, a paddleboat and a stand-up paddle board. This cabin’s unique location on the eastern edge of Sand Lake means that the tide occasionally pushes agates up onto the property’s private shore. The lake's geography also yields a productive fishing spot just out from the dock.
Sand Lake is a large, clean lake popular for boating, swimming and fishing. Large pontoons and fishing boats are available at the north shore of the lake through the Sand Lake Resort. There are also great dining and recreation opportunities nearby, such as the Moose Lake Golf Club (drive or boat up!) and the Lazy Moose, with homemade pies, bread, and its signature wild rice meatloaf. Doc’s, in nearby Sturgeon Lake, offers smoked pulled pork and other BBQ specialties.
Visitors to the area may enjoy an outdoor expedition through the Munger and Soo trail systems, which are open to hiking and biking, as well as ATVs. Pay a visit to Moose Lake State Park and browse through the local Moose Lake Agate Museum, or tour a number of other nearby state parks, like Jay Cooke, for eclectic natural features and scenic views.
On your way to the cabin, don’t forget to stop at Toby’s in Hinckley for a warm caramel roll (if you’re coming from the south) or Gordy’s Hi-Hat in Cloquet for a quintessential Northland Diner experience (if you’re coming from the north). Gordy himself, now in his 90s and featured on numerous television shows, may very well take your order.
Duluth is a 45-minute day trip away, and features scores of restaurants, live music and the waterfront area brimming with activities.

The cabin is open for rental from early May to mid-October every year. Our family spends part of June and all of July there, so it is not available during that time.
From August 1 until Labor Day, there is a 5-night minimum stay, though we relax that requirement if the cabin is unbooked within 2-3 weeks of your intended stay.
There is a $150 cleaning fee on all stays.
Check-in anytime after 3PM and check out by 10AM.
A 20% deposit is due at booking. The balance is due within a month of booking (no later than the arrival date if the booking is within a month of arrival).
Cancellations made up to seven days prior to check-in will receive a refund of all but the deposit. Within a week of check-in, 50% of the rental cost will be refunded. Cancellations made within 24 hours of the stay will not be refunded.

Betsy and Brett spend their time on the lake every summer for about eight weeks. Betsy has been coming since she was a kid, learning to swim and fish in this very spot. The Sand Lake community is a friendly bunch, with deep Nordic roots. It's not uncommon to eat freshly pickled fish at neighborhood gatherings.
