At our Private Waterfront Cottage in Underwood, the lake sets the pace. Settle into a small-group retreat along a country road with no through traffic, where a tree-shaded yard leads down to the water and the deck faces the sunrise. Bring breakfast outside, watch the light move across the lake, and leave a little room in the day's schedule for doing absolutely nothing.

Inside, wood-paneled walls, broad windows and a bright, open living area keep the water in view. Cook in the full kitchen, gather around the dining table, then choose a spot on the sofa or in a lakeside chair. WiFi, a dedicated workspace and a washer and dryer make it easier to settle in when your plans call for more than a quick getaway.

Our cottage welcomes up to four overnight guests. Both bedrooms are upstairs: one has a queen bed, while the other has three single beds; a sofa bed adds sleeping flexibility in the living room without increasing the guest limit. With one full bathroom and a separate half bath, the layout suits a couple, a small family or a few fishing friends who would rather share lake time than a crowded house.

Unique Features

The setting gives you two different views of the day: the lake lies east of the cottage, and a pond sits to the west. Guests have use of the north side of this one-acre property and their own dock. The lake has no public access, adding to the tucked-away feel. The south side contains a separate home that we occasionally occupy, so this is a private cottage stay on a property with another home.

There is room to spread out between the enclosed porch, the broad side deck and the narrower deck facing the water. The latter puts the lake almost at chair level in your view, while the lawn slopes down toward the dock. Please plan for steps into the living areas, stairs to both bedrooms and the downhill walk to the shore; this is a better fit for guests comfortable with that terrain than for anyone needing step-free access.

Things To Do

Start close to home with the provided kayak, an unhurried spell on the dock or an evening around the outdoor fire pit. The small lake suits a quieter kind of water day. Ask us about current paddling equipment and shoreline conditions as you plan, and bring the fishing gear you like to use. Seasonal water access depends on weather and lake conditions.

For a change of scenery, head to Glendalough State Park near Battle Lake. The Beaver Pond Trail is a level, 1.4-mile loop through woods and meadow beside the creek and Blanche Lake. Choose the hillier, 2-mile Lake Emma loop for a longer walk, or bring bikes for the paved 5.8-mile park loop. A vehicle permit is required; check the current park map and conditions before setting out.

Phelps Mill County Park in Underwood pairs an 1889 flour mill with the Otter Tail River, picnic grounds and walking paths. It is a good choice for a little local history and river scenery without committing to a long hike. The county has park improvement work scheduled in 2026, so check access before visiting; winter access is limited and facilities close for the off-season.

Make a Battle Lake day of it when you want a break from the trail. Browse regional artists' work at Art of the Lakes Gallery, or arrange a guided visit to the Prospect House & Civil War Museum. Museum tours take about 60–90 minutes and should be arranged ahead; the house has many stairs, with a video option for guests who prefer not to climb them. We're Chris and Daryl. We began hosting travel nurses in 2019, and our Private Cottage offers an entire-home stay for guests who want a quieter base in Minnesota lakes country. Chris works in real estate and previously taught kindergarten while our children were growing up.
