Let the fishing crew take the dock and the game players claim the screened boathouse. Our Fish Hook Cabin brings those two kinds of cabin time together on Lake Osakis, in a country setting along a dirt road. This is a stay for families and small circles of friends who like being together without needing every person to follow the same afternoon plan.
Inside, wood-paneled walls and a dining table beside the kitchen give Fish Hook its familiar, small-cabin feel. Make breakfast before the first cast, then bring everyone back for supper and a board game when the fishing reports are in. Wi-Fi, air conditioning and laundry are here when needed, though the lake is likely to win the competition for your attention.
Save the end of the day for the lakeside fire pit and a view of the sunset. Fish stories may get a little longer after dark; we'll leave their accuracy to your group. Up to two pets are welcome. Contact us directly to discuss your dates, sleeping arrangements and docking your own boat, so the practical questions are settled before your cabin time begins.
Our screened boathouse gives the group a second place to gather right beside the water. It has a futon, table, dartboard and music, making it a handy spot for teens to hang out or for a board-game session with a lake view. Back in the cabin, one bedroom has a queen bed; the second has a queen with a twin XL bunk above it. Those beds sleep five, with a double sleeper sofa in the living area for flexibility within our six-guest limit. The bathroom has a shower.
Fish Hook is equipped for guests who want to spend time on the water. The dock has cleats and built-in bumpers for your own boat, and an outdoor fish-cleaning table keeps that job out of the kitchen. We provide a 15-foot canoe with paddles and a stand-up paddleboard that converts to a seated kayak. Adult life jackets are available in the boathouse; bring properly fitted jackets for children.
Begin with what is here: paddle along the Lake Osakis shore using our provided canoe or convertible paddleboard, fish from the dock, or unpack the ladder ball, bean bag boards and bocce set. The board-game collection offers choices from Connect 4 to cribbage when you want an indoor afternoon. A motorboat is not included; ask us about docking your own boat before arrival.
For a walk or bike ride, head into downtown Osakis to the trailhead at 11 Main Street East. Here the Lake Wobegon Regional Trail meets the Central Lakes State Trail. Choose a short paved out-and-back at your own pace, or make a longer ride east toward Sauk Centre: that Lake Wobegon segment is about 12 miles one way, so allow roughly 24 miles if returning to Osakis. The Central Lakes route continues the other direction toward Nelson and Alexandria. Bring your own bicycles; these trails start in town, separately from the cabin.
Plan a separate outing to Lake Carlos State Park for woodland and wetland scenery. The 0.6-mile Wetland Overlook loop is a shorter choice with some hills and an overlook of Schumacher's Slough. For more walking, the 1.4-mile Hidden Lake loop begins from the beach parking area and follows gravel and packed dirt through forest, also with some hills. Fall brings sugar-maple color along that route. A vehicle permit is required. Dogs may join you on a leash no longer than six feet, but are not allowed at the beach or in park buildings.
For a meal away from the stove, Head of the Lakes Resort has a bar and grill on Gardenia Drive; check its current kitchen hours before you go. Pair a town outing with cones, malts or sundaes at Tip Top Dairy Bar, 22 West Nokomis Street, and check its seasonal opening schedule. If weather changes your park plans, Lake Carlos' visitor center offers exhibits when open, or bring the afternoon back to our screened boathouse for a game.
