Cabin 1 greets you at the top of a pine-lined lane, set just far enough from Wabana’s shoreline to feel tucked away yet close enough that waves still reach your ears. Step through the door and you’ll find a bright, open living-dining space where picture windows frame maple and birch instead of screen time. Three restful bedrooms anchor either side of the main room, so night-owls and early-risers can keep their own schedules without tip-toeing.
A screened side porch quickly becomes the crowd favorite—think sunrise coffee with chickadees for company, or family dinners safe from the occasional mosquito. After meals, wander the two-minute path past tall white pines to the sandy beach for a swim, or linger on the lawn for a lazy game of ladder-golf while supper sizzles on the grill.
When evening settles in, sparks rise from your private fire ring and the Northwoods night sky turns on its endless stars. At $1,295 per week for up to six guests, Cabin 1 delivers classic resort charm plus a little extra elbow room.
Pocket-park yard. Because Cabin 1 sits back from the water, it enjoys the largest grassy play space of any three-bedroom unit—perfect for cartwheels, cornhole, or parking the kiddo’s bikes.
Unplug-friendly layout. A wide interior archway keeps cooks, card-sharks, and couch-readers in the same visual orbit, making together-time easy even during rainy-day board-game marathons.
Quick flip access. Need another bundle of wood, a fresh bag of ice, or a change of scenery? The main lodge, game room, and sauna are all a short, level stroll away—no steep shoreline steps to tackle with little ones in tow.
Beach mornings & sauna nights: Claim a patch of soft sand for castle-building, then wind down with a wood-fired sweat and a cool lake plunge—Minnesota hydrotherapy at its finest.
Cast & paddle: Borrow a canoe and explore the quiet channel into Little Wabana, trolling for walleye along the rock points. Younger anglers love dropping a line right from the swim dock where panfish school.
Gear-free fun: Challenge new friends on the lakeside volleyball court or duck inside for ping-pong, pool, and the hyper-local “Wabanapoly” board game. The eagles-nest overlook trail starts just behind Cabin 1—binoculars recommended.
Grand Rapids day trips: Bike a paved stretch of the Mesabi Trail, tour logging history at the Forest History Center, then refuel with craft pints at Rapids Brewing or lattes from Brewed Awakenings. Evening plans? Check the Myles Reif Center calendar for live music, comedy, and dance.

“Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka” means “dwelling place among the birch trees” in the Ojibwe language—a fitting name for a resort that has sheltered three generations of the Miner family and thousands of happy lake‑lovers. Schoolteachers Morey and Barbara Miner first opened the doors in the mid‑1920s as a summer side‑gig; it quickly became their life’s calling. Together with their sons Jon and Doug, they welcomed guests for more than six decades, teaching fishing tips and Northwoods lore with the same patience they once brought to the classroom.
Today, grandsons Mark and Jay—along with their own kids—carry the torch. You’ll still spot the original log beams and birch‑tree shoreline that captivated Morey and Barbara, but you’ll also notice smart updates: comfy beds, faster Wi‑Fi, and well‑equipped cabins that make lake life effortless. What hasn’t changed is our family’s promise: every guest arrives as a visitor and leaves feeling like part of the Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka story.
Whether you’re paddling out at sunrise, swapping stories around a crackling fire, or teaching the next generation how to reel in a walleye, we’re here to make your time on Lake Wabana unforgettable. Come write your own chapter among the birch trees—we’ll have the porch light on.
