Tucked just a few steps from Wabana Lake’s jewel-toned shoreline, Cabin 2 at WA-GA-THA-KA Resort is your cozy Northwoods base camp for four. Wake up to loon calls, sip coffee on the screened porch, and watch the morning mist lift over the pines before slipping into a day that moves at whatever pace you choose.
Inside, knotty-pine walls and picture-window lake views frame an open living-and-dining space that feels equal parts cabin-classic and freshly updated. Two comfortable bedrooms—one with a queen, the other with twin beds—share a full bath, while the well-stocked kitchen keeps pancake breakfasts and walleye dinners easy. After sunset, the glow of the stone fireplace (or the flatscreen for movie night) turns the living room into a warm retreat.
Step outside and you’re on your own patch of lakefront, complete with a private fire ring, grill, and easy trail to the sand beach. A few yards down the path you’ll find the resort’s vintage wood-fired sauna, canoes, and a game room when the weather rolls in. However you fill the hours, Cabin 2 makes it simple to trade notifications for the rhythm of wind in the treetops.
West-facing water views. Cabin 2 sits on a gentle point that drinks in every drop of golden hour; you get front-row seats to Wabana’s famous technicolor sunsets without leaving your Adirondack chair.
Kid-friendly shallows right out front. The shoreline in front of this cabin slopes gradually, making it an easy, worry-free spot for younger swimmers to splash while adults cast a line from the dock.
Resort history with modern comforts. Built in the 1940s and lovingly refreshed, Cabin 2 pairs original log beams with high-speed Wi-Fi, thoughtful LED lighting, and smart-home thermostats—proof that rustic charm and 2025 conveniences can happily share the same roof.
Start the morning with a sunrise paddle; canoes and kayaks are ready on the rack, and Wabana’s glass-calm water often delivers a mirror reflection of the white pines. Anglers will want to keep rods rigged for smallmouth and trophy-worthy northern pike—ask at the office for the reef coordinates locals swear by.
Back on land, rally the crew for beach volleyball or a sauna-plunge combo before lighting the campfire for s’mores. Rainy afternoon? The rec hall’s ping-pong table and legendary “Wabanapoly” board promise bragging rights long after checkout.
When curiosity pulls you beyond the 25-acre grounds, head 20 minutes south to Grand Rapids. Tour the Forest History Center’s 1900s logging camp, catch a matinee at the Judy Garland Museum, or roll the paved Mesabi Trail by bike straight from town.
Cap the day with a craft flight at Rapids Brewing Co. or live music on Tioga Recreation Area’s forest stage, then swing by Brewed Awakenings for morning pastries on your way back to the cabin. The Northwoods are wide open—let Cabin 2 be your launchpad.

“Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka” means “dwelling place among the birch trees” in the Ojibwe language—a fitting name for a resort that has sheltered three generations of the Miner family and thousands of happy lake‑lovers. Schoolteachers Morey and Barbara Miner first opened the doors in the mid‑1920s as a summer side‑gig; it quickly became their life’s calling. Together with their sons Jon and Doug, they welcomed guests for more than six decades, teaching fishing tips and Northwoods lore with the same patience they once brought to the classroom.
Today, grandsons Mark and Jay—along with their own kids—carry the torch. You’ll still spot the original log beams and birch‑tree shoreline that captivated Morey and Barbara, but you’ll also notice smart updates: comfy beds, faster Wi‑Fi, and well‑equipped cabins that make lake life effortless. What hasn’t changed is our family’s promise: every guest arrives as a visitor and leaves feeling like part of the Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka story.
Whether you’re paddling out at sunrise, swapping stories around a crackling fire, or teaching the next generation how to reel in a walleye, we’re here to make your time on Lake Wabana unforgettable. Come write your own chapter among the birch trees—we’ll have the porch light on.
