Wake up to the soft lap of Wabana Lake right outside Cabin #4, a welcoming three-bedroom retreat that comfortably hosts up to six guests. Perched just steps from the shoreline, the cabin’s knotty-pine interior and picture windows keep the water—and that pure Northwoods air—front and center while you cook, dine, or curl up on the sofa.
Slide the patio door open and drift onto the lakeside deck for sunrise coffee; loons are often your only company. Inside, an open-concept kitchen makes it easy to chat with the crew while whipping up flapjacks, and the adjoining living room’s stone fireplace takes the edge off cool Minnesota evenings. Three well-spaced bedrooms—one queen, one double, and a charming twin-over-full bunk room—offer a little privacy after full days of fresh air.
When dusk settles, wander to your private fire ring, s’mores kit in hand. The sky here still gets properly dark, and the Milky Way feels close enough to touch. Between the sparks, the waves, and a chorus of crickets, Cabin #4 ends every day with its own Northwoods lullaby.
Lake-level screen porch: Unlike our hillside cabins, #4 sits nearly flush with the waterline, giving you a sweeping 180-degree view through a breezy screen room—perfect for mosquito-free card games or late-night storytelling.
Steps-away Finnish sauna: Follow a short cedar-chip path to the resort’s wood-fired sauna, then cool off with an exhilarating plunge from the dock. Guests in Cabin #4 love the “sauna + star-dip” ritual before bed.
Thoughtful extras: A ready-stacked pile of complimentary firewood, an heirloom canoe reserved for Cabin #4, and a shelf of vintage board games (yes, including “Wabanapoly”) add a dash of old-school charm you won’t find in big-box rentals.
Spend the morning on our sandy swimming beach, challenge the kids to a volleyball match, or paddle a canoe through the quiet back bays where eagles nest overhead. Anglers can head straight to the drop-offs between Wabana and Little Wabana—walleyes and smallmouth keep even rookie fishers grinning.
Swap rods for hiking shoes and bike the paved Mesabi Trail right from the Grand Rapids trailhead, or tackle Tioga Recreation Area’s fast-flowing singletrack. Golfers will find tree-lined fairways at Pokegama Golf Course, while history buffs can step back in time at the Forest History Center’s 1900s logging camp.
Let Grand Rapids entertain you after dinner: browse local art at Macrostie Art Center, catch a live show at the Reif Performing Arts Center, or sip a small-batch brew on the patio at Rapids Brewing Co. Movie buff? The Judy Garland Museum is a must for “Wizard of Oz” trivia and childhood memorabilia.
On slower days, keep it simple—grab an iced latte from Brewed Awakenings, wander Old Central School’s boutiques, then end up swimming the sapphire-blue Tioga Pit before drifting back to your deck for sunset.

“Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka” means “dwelling place among the birch trees” in the Ojibwe language—a fitting name for a resort that has sheltered three generations of the Miner family and thousands of happy lake‑lovers. Schoolteachers Morey and Barbara Miner first opened the doors in the mid‑1920s as a summer side‑gig; it quickly became their life’s calling. Together with their sons Jon and Doug, they welcomed guests for more than six decades, teaching fishing tips and Northwoods lore with the same patience they once brought to the classroom.
Today, grandsons Mark and Jay—along with their own kids—carry the torch. You’ll still spot the original log beams and birch‑tree shoreline that captivated Morey and Barbara, but you’ll also notice smart updates: comfy beds, faster Wi‑Fi, and well‑equipped cabins that make lake life effortless. What hasn’t changed is our family’s promise: every guest arrives as a visitor and leaves feeling like part of the Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka story.
Whether you’re paddling out at sunrise, swapping stories around a crackling fire, or teaching the next generation how to reel in a walleye, we’re here to make your time on Lake Wabana unforgettable. Come write your own chapter among the birch trees—we’ll have the porch light on.
