Tucked into the towering pines of WA-GA-THA-KA Resort, Cabin #5 is a one-bedroom hideaway made for two. Wake up to sunlight dancing across Wabana Lake, pour coffee on the screened porch, and watch loons ripple the glass-still water before the day even begins. Inside, knotty-pine walls, a simple kitchenette, and a snug living space create that “we-could-stay-here-forever” feeling without sacrificing everyday comforts.
Step a few yards down the gentle slope and your toes land in soft, sugar-sand—perfect for an afternoon float or a spontaneous cannonball. Evenings settle in with lake-breath breezes and the crackle of your private fire ring; we keep the woodpile stocked so you can focus on marshmallows and Milky Way stargazing. When the northern lights decide to dance, Cabin #5’s shoreline offers front-row seats, free of city glow.
Though Grand Rapids sits just 13 miles south, the cabin feels worlds away—secluded enough for hush-quiet naps yet connected to a resort community that’s always ready with a friendly wave, a fishing tip, or a spare paddle.
Hand-built heritage. Cabin #5 holds the same hand-crafted timber bones our grandparents raised, refreshed with modern linens, newer windows, and reliable Wi-Fi so you can share lake photos without missing a sunset.
Wood-fired wellness. A few steps from your door, our classic cedar sauna heats to a soul-soothing 180°F. Follow up with a brisk lake plunge and you’ll understand why Finnish families have sworn by this ritual for centuries.
Eagle-eye vantage. A narrow point of land juts between Wabana and Little Wabana, giving Cabin #5 a near-panoramic shoreline—and frequent fly-bys from the resident bald eagles that nest in the tall white pines above the resort.
Start the morning with a slow paddle: we keep canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats ready on the beach so you can glide past lily pads while otters pop up to say hello. Anglers love our sheltered bay for pre-breakfast casts; walleye often bite before the coffee’s gone. Mid-day, claim the volleyball court, break a sweat, then cool off with a lazy float off the swim raft.
Craving a history fix? Drive 20 minutes to the Forest History Center and step into a 1900s logging camp. Movie buffs won’t want to miss the Judy Garland Museum—yes, the original ruby-slipper girl grew up right here in Grand Rapids. Cyclists can hop on the paved Mesabi Trail at Fairgrounds Road for miles of iron-range scenery, while mountain-bike thrill-seekers hit the Tioga Recreation Area’s gravity lines just up Hwy 38.
Evenings pair perfectly with a craft pint at Klockow Brewing or live music on the patio at Rapids Brewing Co. Grab fish-n-chips at the Pokegama Grill, then cap things off back at the cabin where the sauna’s heating and the s’mores kit is waiting.
Rainy sky? No worries—our on-site game room serves up billiards, ping-pong, and a competitive round of “Wabanapoly.” Or curl into the screened porch with a local roast from Brewed Awakenings and let the storm roll by.

“Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka” means “dwelling place among the birch trees” in the Ojibwe language—a fitting name for a resort that has sheltered three generations of the Miner family and thousands of happy lake‑lovers. Schoolteachers Morey and Barbara Miner first opened the doors in the mid‑1920s as a summer side‑gig; it quickly became their life’s calling. Together with their sons Jon and Doug, they welcomed guests for more than six decades, teaching fishing tips and Northwoods lore with the same patience they once brought to the classroom.
Today, grandsons Mark and Jay—along with their own kids—carry the torch. You’ll still spot the original log beams and birch‑tree shoreline that captivated Morey and Barbara, but you’ll also notice smart updates: comfy beds, faster Wi‑Fi, and well‑equipped cabins that make lake life effortless. What hasn’t changed is our family’s promise: every guest arrives as a visitor and leaves feeling like part of the Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka story.
Whether you’re paddling out at sunrise, swapping stories around a crackling fire, or teaching the next generation how to reel in a walleye, we’re here to make your time on Lake Wabana unforgettable. Come write your own chapter among the birch trees—we’ll have the porch light on.
