Tucked beneath a stand of whispering birches, Cabin 6 is a classic three-bedroom hideout that puts you just steps from Lake Wabana’s gin-clear shoreline. Big windows pull in the shimmering water view, while an open-plan living and dining area lets everyone gather for card games or a lazy morning pancake spread. At $1,295 a week, it’s an easy choice for families or two couple-and-kids combos looking for a laid-back northern Minnesota stay.
Knotty-pine walls and hand-hewn ceiling beams keep the cabin’s 1920s soul intact, yet recent updates—energy-efficient windows, new mattresses, and reliable Wi-Fi—quietly boost comfort. The full kitchen is stocked with the pots, pans, and percolator you keep forgetting to pack, and the lakeside queen bedroom practically guarantees you’ll wake to loon calls.
Outside, a private campfire ring, park-style charcoal grill, and picnic table extend your living space under the stars. When you’re ready to roam, it’s a short stroll to WA-GA-THA-KA Resort’s wide sandy beach, wood-fired sauna, game room, and free fleet of canoes, paddle boats, and fishing rigs—everything you need for a week of unplugged fun.
A cabin among the birches. WA-GA-THA-KA means “dwelling place among the birch trees,” and Cabin 6 lives up to the name with front-row seats to tall white trunks and rustling leaves that filter the afternoon sun. You’ll find a birch-bark guestbook on the coffee table—a nod to the Miner family who began welcoming guests here nearly a century ago.
Screen porch made for rainy days. A fully screened side porch doubles as a bonus living room. Sip morning coffee as otters cruise the shoreline, or tuck in with a board game while the smell of rain drifts off the lake. Because the porch faces west, sunset colors often linger long after the sky darkens.
Unlimited firewood & private sauna hours. Skip the extra charge many resorts tack on—Cabin 6 includes as many armloads of dry split wood as you can carry. Reserve your complimentary slot in the resort’s cedar sauna, then finish the Nordic cycle with a leap off the dock into Wabana’s natural “cold plunge.”
Start the day with a sunrise paddle; the resort’s canoes and paddle boats are free for Cabin 6 guests, and Lake Wabana’s mirror-calm water is ideal for spotting bald eagles and loons. Anglers can cast for walleye and smallmouth right from the dock, while kids scavenge for minnows in the shallows or challenge new friends to beach volleyball.
When the afternoon heat rolls in, slip into the sauna, then cool off with cannonballs from the swim raft. Rainy spell? Head to the game room for ping-pong, pool, or the resort-exclusive “Wabanapoly.” Evenings close with s’mores around your own fire ring—just add stories and a sky glittering with boundary-waters stars.
Craving a day out? Grand Rapids (13 miles) packs plenty to explore: trace logging history at the Forest History Center, snap Oz photos at the Judy Garland Museum, or pedal a scenic stretch of the Mesabi Trail. Art lovers wander the Macrostie Art Center, while golfers tee off at Pokegama Golf Course & Grill.
Round out the itinerary with single-track thrills at Tioga Recreation Area, a pint at Klockow Brewing or Rapids Brewing Co., and live music or dance at the Myles Reif Performing Arts Center. For a low-key finale, grab lattes from Brewed Awakenings, bring them back to the dock, and watch the sun slip behind Wabana’s pines.

“Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka” means “dwelling place among the birch trees” in the Ojibwe language—a fitting name for a resort that has sheltered three generations of the Miner family and thousands of happy lake‑lovers. Schoolteachers Morey and Barbara Miner first opened the doors in the mid‑1920s as a summer side‑gig; it quickly became their life’s calling. Together with their sons Jon and Doug, they welcomed guests for more than six decades, teaching fishing tips and Northwoods lore with the same patience they once brought to the classroom.
Today, grandsons Mark and Jay—along with their own kids—carry the torch. You’ll still spot the original log beams and birch‑tree shoreline that captivated Morey and Barbara, but you’ll also notice smart updates: comfy beds, faster Wi‑Fi, and well‑equipped cabins that make lake life effortless. What hasn’t changed is our family’s promise: every guest arrives as a visitor and leaves feeling like part of the Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka story.
Whether you’re paddling out at sunrise, swapping stories around a crackling fire, or teaching the next generation how to reel in a walleye, we’re here to make your time on Lake Wabana unforgettable. Come write your own chapter among the birch trees—we’ll have the porch light on.
