Step into Cabin 7 at WA-GA-THA-KA Resort and feel that instant exhale that only lake life delivers. Your three-bedroom hideaway sits a few easy steps from the shoreline of crystal-clear Wabana Lake, so mornings begin with loons calling and coffee steaming on the deck. Inside, wood-panel accents, plush seating, and big picture windows keep the water in view whether you’re sharing breakfast or settling in for a late-night card game. When the sun hits its stride, grab a towel and follow the scent of pine down to the wide, sandy beach—perfect for cannonball contests and sand-castle architects of every age. Evenings wind down around your private firepit, sparks lifting into a sky so dark you’ll swear you can touch the stars.

Because we’re just 13 miles north of Grand Rapids, MN, you get the best of two worlds: serene Northwoods seclusion plus quick drives to groceries, galleries, and live music. Back at the resort, a classic wood-fired sauna melts away trail-tired muscles, and the game room—with ping-pong, pool, and the legendary “Wabanapoly” board—is a rainy-day hero. At $1,295 per week for up to six guests, Cabin 7 sets the stage for memory-making without blowing the vacation budget.

Unique Features

Front-row lake access. Unlike units tucked behind the tree line, Cabin 7 sits right on the water’s edge, so fishing from the dock or slipping a canoe in at sunrise takes seconds, not minutes. Add our complimentary paddleboats and you’ve got endless ways to explore Wabana’s hidden bays.

Heritage with heart. The Miner family has steered WA-GA-THA-KA since the 1920s, and their stewardship shows in thoughtful touches—from tidy stacks of complimentary firewood to the hand-painted resort map that hangs in every cabin. You’re not at a cookie-cutter rental; you’re part of a living legacy.

Room to roam. The resort’s 25 acres include quiet trails where kids hunt for agates, an eagles-nest overlook for birdwatchers, and a lakeside volleyball court that lights up after dark. Cabin 7’s generous porch screens summer breezes while keeping mosquitoes at bay—perfect for jigsaw-puzzle marathons or nap-inducing hammock time.

Things To Do

On the water: Cast for walleye right off the dock, or motor across to Little Wabana Lake—local anglers swear the weed beds there hide trophy northern pike. Prefer paddling? Slip into a kayak at golden hour when the surface turns to glass.

Around the resort: Fire up the grill for fresh-caught fish tacos, then sweat it out in the wood-fired sauna before a cool plunge. Younger guests gravitate to the playground while teens challenge new friends to beach volleyball showdowns.

Trail & town adventures: Pedal a stretch of the paved Mesabi Trail, or head ten minutes south to the Tioga Recreation Area for flowy mountain-bike loops and the emerald-green Tioga Pit swimming hole. When culture calls, pop into downtown Grand Rapids for exhibits at MacRostie Art Center, then sip craft ales at Rapids Brewing Co. or a latte from Brewed Awakenings.

Rain-day gems: Dive into Minnesota’s past at the Forest History Center, belt out “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” with memorabilia at the Judy Garland Museum, or browse artisan shops in Old Central School. Evening plans? Check the calendar at the Myles Reif Performing Arts Center for concerts ranging from bluegrass to ballet.

About the Owner/Manager

“Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka” means “dwelling place among the birch trees” in the Ojibwe language—a fitting name for a resort that has sheltered three generations of the Miner family and thousands of happy lake‑lovers. Schoolteachers Morey and Barbara Miner first opened the doors in the mid‑1920s as a summer side‑gig; it quickly became their life’s calling. Together with their sons Jon and Doug, they welcomed guests for more than six decades, teaching fishing tips and Northwoods lore with the same patience they once brought to the classroom.

Today, grandsons Mark and Jay—along with their own kids—carry the torch. You’ll still spot the original log beams and birch‑tree shoreline that captivated Morey and Barbara, but you’ll also notice smart updates: comfy beds, faster Wi‑Fi, and well‑equipped cabins that make lake life effortless. What hasn’t changed is our family’s promise: every guest arrives as a visitor and leaves feeling like part of the Wa‑Ga‑Tha‑Ka story.

Whether you’re paddling out at sunrise, swapping stories around a crackling fire, or teaching the next generation how to reel in a walleye, we’re here to make your time on Lake Wabana unforgettable. Come write your own chapter among the birch trees—we’ll have the porch light on.
